The first week of school is often a whirlwind of activity, from meeting new students to setting up classroom routines. Simplifying this busy time can make it more enjoyable and less stressful for both teachers and students. Here are five ready-to-go solutions to help you start the school year on the right foot.
1. Create a Welcome Packet
A welcome packet is a great way to provide students and parents with all the necessary information for the new school year. Include a class schedule, contact information, classroom rules, and any forms that need to be filled out. You can also add a welcome letter introducing yourself and your teaching philosophy. This packet helps set expectations and provides a reference for parents throughout the year.
Tip: Make the welcome packet visually appealing with bright colors and fun graphics to engage students and parents.
2. Develop a Daily Routine
Establishing a daily routine from day one helps students understand what to expect each day, reducing anxiety and creating a sense of stability. Clearly outline the daily schedule and post it in a visible place in the classroom. Include time for morning activities, lessons, breaks, lunch, and end-of-day routines.
Tip: Use visual aids like charts or icons for younger students who may not be able to read the schedule yet. There are some very cute freebies on TPT to download. One of my favorites is from Tina's Teaching Treasures. The resource also includes class job cards that are so important to maintaining routine. CLICK HERE to see her free cards!
3. Prepare Icebreaker Activities
Icebreaker activities are essential for helping students get to know each other and feel comfortable in their new environment. Plan a variety of activities that cater to different personality types, such as group games, partner interviews, and creative projects. These activities can also provide insight into students' interests and personalities, helping you tailor your teaching strategies.
Example Activity: While I don't forget about the old classics like "Two Truths and a Lie" - the resources I have created the last few years have a proven FUN! track record, including:
Buddy Biographies Writing Project - (perfect for your first writing project!)
Speed Friendshipping - (freebie!)
Group Growth: creating group names and goals (in the resource library!) The activites you see below (and more!) are in my FREE RESOURCES page and in my store!
4. Organize Classroom Supplies

A well-organized classroom can significantly reduce stress and wasted time. Before school starts, arrange your classroom supplies in a logical and accessible manner. Label shelves, drawers, and bins so that students know where to find and return materials. This organization helps foster independence and responsibility.
Tip: Create a student supply station with extra pencils, erasers, paper, and other frequently used items to minimize disruptions during lessons.
5. Implement a Positive Behavior System
Setting up a positive behavior system from the beginning encourages good conduct and creates a positive learning environment. It is important to co-construct expectations together. I like to remind my students that teaching is my job and learning in school is their "job." Class rewards systems for meeting them will be like their pay cheque! Using tools like behavior charts, reward tickets, or a class points system to track and reinforce positive behavior for a smooth year!
Tip: Celebrate small victories to keep students motivated and reinforce the desired behaviors! I love BINGO boards and digital reward trackers.
I have FREE digital reward trackers in my FREEBIE library! Make sure to take a look!
